ThyssenKrupp and Mazagon Docks: A German-Indian alliance for submarines
The two maritime giants, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have entered into an agreement to overhaul and upgrade the Indian submarine INS Shankush, part of a series of Class 209 Type 1500 HDW submarines.
This project will start with the cooperation of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, which will act as general contractors. On the other hand, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems will provide technical support and the supply of selected materials, systems and components.
The INS Shankush submarine was built and delivered in the 1980s as part of German-Indian cooperation. This new project aims to improve the submarine’s operational capacity, extending its useful life and functionality.
History of cooperation in the construction of submarines
The relationship between ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders dates back to the 1980s when they partnered with the Indian Navy to build four diesel-electric submarines.
The first two ships were built in Germany, while the next two, including INS Shankush, were built in India at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
In 2018, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders had already extended the life of the INS Shishumar, the first submarine in the series, with a Medium Refit Cum Life Certification (MRLC). The modernization of this submarine will be completed after this year’s sea trials.
A lasting commitment to India
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, has underlined the company’s long-term commitment to India, citing the tradition of four decades of collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
The INS Shankush modernization contract reinforces this relationship, demonstrating the competence and experience of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in the submarine sector.
The future modernization of the INS Shankush
Over the next three years, the INS Shankush submarine will be modernized with on-site technical support and pressure hull inspection by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders as the general contractor.
