NATO countries will hand over two Leopard 2 tank battalions as well as four Leopard 1 battalions to Ukraine. In total, there are 160 tanks, according to what German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius declared in an interview for Die Welt newspaper.
Leopard tanks in Ukraine
According to him, Germany, Poland, and other allies will send two Leopard 2 battalions consisting of 60 tanks to Ukraine. And by the end of the year, four battalions of Leopard 1 – 100 tanks will be added to them.
At the same time, the minister noted that it is unlikely that it would be possible to send more tanks of this type since “the resources of the Allies are limited” and Germany “cannot give everything, because there are reserves that cannot be spent.”
“I don’t see a scenario where it’s possible to send more Leopards than advertised to Ukraine,” Pistorius said.
NATO backs Ukraine
This week Ukraine has received 18 Leopard 2 main battle tanks from Germany. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov personally tested the German Marder IFVs that arrived in Ukraine.
Leopard 2 tanks are considered one of Europe’s best modern main battle tanks. Following the announcement, the Ukrainian ambassador to France announced that several European countries had committed to sending more than 300 main battle tanks to Ukraine.
