The Russian outlet OverCloser has revealed that the MiG-41, an aircraft without a rival in its category, is close to entering service. It is expected to join the Russian Air Force in the next 2-3 years.

Despite the latter’s impressive track record, this aircraft is intended to replace the MiG-31. The current MiG-31s are being modernized, but their eventual decommissioning is expected due to the depletion of production resources.

The PAK DP program, from which the MiG-41 emerges, has been carried out secretly. The prototype was originally planned to fly in 2025, but designers have moved faster than expected.

Advanced features of the MiG-41

It is speculated that the MiG-41 will be able to match the speed of supersonic reconnaissance aircraft. It could operate near space and reach speeds greater than Mach 3. One of its mentioned capabilities is to launch satellites into low orbits.

Despite the lack of confirmed technical specifications, it is reported that the MiG-41 will be able to reach speeds between Mach 4 and 4.5. There is also the possibility that it will operate unmanned.

The 6th generation aircraft design, the category to which the MiG-41 belongs, involves features such as maximum stealth, networking capability, flight efficiency, and laser weaponry.

Stealth Tech Challenges

Russian MiG-41: sonic breakthrough or impossible dream?

One of the challenges faced by the design team is maintaining stealth effectiveness at high speeds. At speeds of 3,000 km/h, conventional stealth liners can deteriorate.

This deterioration would affect the plane’s ability to evade radars. It is unclear how the team has overcome this challenge, but they have ensured that they have established key performance characteristics.

Combining near hypersonic speed with effective stealth technology is an area of interest, as stealth can be expensive to repair.
