Type-80 General Purpose Machine Gun

China’s 80-type 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun is a copy of the former Soviet Union’s PKM-style 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun. In the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam, China seized the PKM general-purpose machine gun equipped by the Vietnamese army and decided to imitate it.

The imitation was successful, and the final result was the Type 80 general-purpose machine gun. The former Soviet Union developed the PKM general-purpose machine gun for battalions, companies, and platoons.

The gun uses 7.62x54mm bullets, is fed by a belt, and has a total weight of 12.6 kg. The gun has an effective range of up to 1 kilometer and a theoretical rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. The PKM general-purpose machine gun is famous for its strong firepower and low failure rate on the battlefield.

The gun is also designed with an extended barrel, which is more suitable for long-distance fire suppression. The PKM general-purpose machine gun can also be loaded on armored vehicles and tanks as a secondary weapon. So far, the output of the PK M series of general-purpose machine guns has exceeded 1 million.

Like the prototype PKM general-purpose machine gun, the Type 80 machine gun also has the advantages of a simple and compact structure, high reliability, and lightweight.

Type-80 General Purpose Machine Gun

The 80-type machine gun adopts the principle of air-guided automatic and the rotating locking mechanism of the bolt and draws on the strengths of other companies in structure. The gun has a total length of 1192 mm and a caliber of 7.62 mm.

It uses 100 rounds or 200 rounds of ammunition chains to feed the ammunition. After installing the tripod, the total weight is 12.6 kg. In heavy machine gun mode, its effective range is 1,000 meters. When used as a light machine gun, it has an effective range of 800 meters, a muzzle velocity of 825 m/s, and a theoretical rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute.

After the Type 80 machine gun was successfully developed, the engineers took it to the shooting range and conducted a comprehensive comparative test with the early Type 67 machine gun.

The final conclusion is that the 80-type machine gun has high shooting accuracy and long service life, which can fully meet the requirements of tactical and technical use, and is better than the 67-type machine gun.

Finally, the 67-type machine gun used the tripod of the 80-type machine gun and carried out other weight reductions to improve the lighter 67-2 type machine gun. However, it was still heavier than the 80-type machine gun, and the shooting accuracy after weight reduction was also reduced.

However, due to consideration of equipment inheritance and other issues, the PLA did not officially install the Type 80 general-purpose machine gun in the end but was equipped with the Type 67-2 machine gun, improved based on the Type 67 machine gun. The Type 80 general-purpose machine gun is only equipped in a small amount in some airborne troops, marines, and special brigades.

Although the Type 80 general-purpose machine gun has nothing to do with the People’s Liberation Army in the foreign trade arms market, the Type 80 general-purpose machine gun has ushered in new glory.

In order to expand the market, Changfeng Company modified the Type 80 machine gun to fire 7.62x51mm NATO standard ammunition and named it CS/LM 4 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun.

Except that the weight is slightly larger than the Type 80 machine gun, this NATO caliber PKM is the same as the prototype gun in terms of structure and principle, but due to the different ammunition fired and the chamber pressure, some parts have been adjusted appropriately.

The original 80-type machine gun production line can produce this NATO caliber PKM without major adjustments, which is much easier to control costs, and it is also easier to enter the military market of those former Warsaw Pact countries whose political and military forces have turned to the West.

Due to the high quality and low price of the Type 80 machine gun, it is welcomed by many countries and is still exported in large quantities.
